How can the Jewish People as a WHOLE return to Torah, and EN MASSE, if even the average yeshiva bachur who, despite learning in yeshiva most of his life, is more skilled in casting uncertainty on any halakhic opinion than skilled in a comprehensive view of the entirely of practical Talmudic law. In his article titled ""Law and Hermeneutics in Rabbinic Jurisprudence,"" Daiyyan wa'Hakham Jose Faur describes the uniqueness of Maimonides' work compared to that of other rabbis in medieval times. Hakham Faur writes: ""Rabbinic literature, in general, and the Talmud, in particular, have been interpreted by various authorities during medieval times. Yet this author chooses to base this study on Maimonidean tradition for three reasons. First, historically, Maimonides' understanding of rabbinic jurisprudence is closely associated with the intellectual tradition of the Geonim. The academies of the Geonim were organically connected with the actual schools in which the original Talmudic literature was compiled and taught. Second, structurally, Maimonides' Mishne Torah is the only code ever produced comprising the entire rabbinic legal system. Therefore, through Maimonides' work, a particular legal theory can be tested against all other elements of the system. Finally, conceptually, Maimonides' legal system affords a comprehensive view of the rabbinic legal system according to juridical (jeridikal) rather than theological or metaphysical principles."" The ONLY way the masses can be restored to a holistic knowledge of Torah is by focusing on the written Torah and learning the clarifications of its commandments through Mishne Torah. There is simply no other systematic codification of the entire spectrum of Talmudic law. To make this a bit more explicit, Rav Yaakov Emden's sefer, Mitpachat Sefarim, is about how the Zohar is a forgery, written by an author much later than Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. (If I recall the specifics, that the vast majority of Zohar are later, and that the Raya Mehamna and Tikkunim of the Zohar is an absolute forgery.) The Chasam Sofer is telling his correspondent that just as this rav falsely attributed the position he wanted to the rebbe of the Chasam Sofer, so too a kabbalist..."
